You’ve probably started to hear the whispers about hemp products and how nourishing they are for the body. Why’s that you ask? Well, did you know that we all have a system inside of our body, just like our immune system, nervous system and endocrine system. This particular system is called the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). The ECS plays an important role in our central nervous system and peripheral nervous system. ‘Endocannabinoid’ simply means that there is cannabis-like substances that naturally occur inside the body, isn’t that wild!
Here’s just a quick breakdown of what the Endocannabinoid system actually does for us. There are these beautiful little receptors in the nervous system which endocannabinoids and cannabinoids bond with. It is a natural part of our body and it has been over looked and misunderstood for many years; up until now.
There are at least two cannabinoid receptors found in the tissues of our bodies. CB1 receptors which are found in the central nervous system (brain and nerves of the spinal cord) and CB2 receptors found in the peripheral nervous system (digestive system and different cells in the immune system). Cannabinoid receptors are said to be the most active in our central nervous system and to think we haven’t even known they exist! It fascinates me how the ECS has so much to do with our body achieving homeostasis, it helps to cool us down when we are hot and vice versa, this is the amazing work of the ECS. Did you also know that when our tummy is grumbling it’s the ECS reminding us to eat and refuel our body, WOW! I’m falling more and more in love with this system everyday! Through these receptors it helps govern a lot of other functions in the body, such as: Digestion, Immune function, Mood, Sleep, Memory, Pleasure, Pain and the list goes on.
